Centene Maintains Leadership in Managed Medicaid Segment as Redetermination Metrics Settle

• With pandemic protections ended and redeterminations returning to normal, Centene leads the Managed Medicaid market with over 13.1 million members in 4Q23, down by over 1.7 million, compared to 4Q22, or about 11.6%.
• Elevance’s Medicaid membership shrunk by 12%, or about 1.1 million members, from 2022 to 2023.
• UnitedHealth lost 700,000 (10.6%), with total 4Q23 Medicaid enrollment figures at 5.9 million, based on NAIC filings.
• Molina’s 2023 year-end enrollment stood at 4.3 million, a decrease of 5.4% from 4Q22.
• Independence Blue Cross (IBX) saw the smallest percentage drop of the top insurers, falling by 5%, or just over 131,000 members. IBX’s decline in Medicaid enrollment was counterbalanced by recent expansions in its state-specific AmeriHealth Caritas plans: 35,000 enrollees via expanded coverage in North Carolina and over 112,000 in new enrollees in Ohio.
